The first American firearm capable of firing a completely self-contained cartridge was designed by Smith & Wesson in 1852. This repeating rifle fired as fast as the shooter could pull the lever and was nicknamed the "Volcano" because the rapid-fire sequence seemed to have the power of a volcanic eruption.
